Retrofits are the hardest test for any sewage treatment plant. The building is occupied, the shafts are already full, and nobody can hand you a fresh basement. At BlueOne Square the separation units went in around the existing plumbing: each unit is 600 x 500 x 500 mm with 110 mm inlet and outlet, serves up to 25 WCs and takes a peak flow of 60 l/s.
Because the separator has no motor, no blower and no chemical dosing, the retrofit needed no new power feed for stage one. Solids are diverted before they ever reach the biology, so there is no sludge pump, no press and nothing to cart off the premises.
The independent lab report on the treated water tells the rest of the story: BOD fell from 77 to 7.3, COD from 198 to 24, TSS from 97 to 5.2, ammoniacal nitrogen from 14 to 0.67 and oil and grease from 6.1 to 0.2. Total coliforms dropped from 9,100 to 5 and E. coli was absent. Every parameter passed against NGT and CPCB norms, which is what allows the output to be reused for flushing, gardening and chiller make-up.
