Aquatron separator and bio-chamber arrangement below a stack of toilets
1 Toilets and ventilation · 2 Separator · 3 Bio-chamber and drainage layer

What does Aquatron® do?

  1. 1.Stops sludge ever forming, by parting faecal solids from the flushing water
  2. 2.Works on three natural principles — momentum of the flushing water, centrifugal force and gravity
  3. 3.No moving parts, no electricity and no chemicals in this stage
  4. 4.Handles peak loads up to 60 litres/second, and infrequent use just as well

What happens to the liquids?

  1. 1.98% of the liquid is separated immediately
  2. 2.2% carries into the bio-chamber with the solids and is filtered out through a special mat
  3. 3.Separated flushing water and urine can be combined with kitchen, bath and washing water
  4. 4.Separated liquid is directly reusable for gardening
  5. 5.Further filtration opens up the other reuse and treatment routes

What happens to the solids?

  1. 1.Faecal matter, paper and any other solids drop into the bio-chamber
  2. 2.Natural bacteria convert up to 95% of the matter into water vapour and CO₂
  3. 3.What is left is a small scoop of hygienic, odourless manure
  4. 4.Emptying the bio-chamber and handling compost is reduced to a minimum
  5. 5.No insects and no unpleasant odours around the dry bio-chamber
The principles behind Aquatron — complete solid separation and effective decomposition of organic matter — took first place at the Swachhathon 1.0 Awards in 2017 for the best faecal treatment technology. Since then it has been adopted by 400+ clients in India, among them the Indian Army, CPWD, leading institutions and private developers.

The Aquatron® STP Process

Aquatron STP process flow from WC water and grey water through separation, bio-chamber, aeration, filtration, UV and reuse
Only liquids go to treatment — no sludge, no sludge pumps, no sludge presses. Solids compost naturally and odourlessly in a dry bio-chamber.

Aquatron® technical specifications

  • Materials: recyclable polyethylene and glass-reinforced polyester
  • Size: approx. 600 mm × 500 mm × 500 mm
  • Inlet diameter 110 mm / outlet diameter 110 mm
  • Theoretical capacity: 60 ltr/second — 3600 ltr/minute
  • Can sit anywhere within 60 metres (200 feet) of the furthest toilet
  • Up to 25 toilets can be connected to a single Aquatron
  • Scales to any capacity by adding more Aquatron units
  • Lifespan: at least 50 years

Bio-chamber

A bio-chamber collects the solids and lets them decompose without odour. It can be built in civil, FRP or SS depending on the site. Recommended design capacity: 24 ltr/user for residential use, 6 ltr/user for non-residential use.

Operation & maintenance

Running an Aquatron is simple and needs no specialist operator. In most cases the whole STP can be automated to save on operator cost. Maintenance of the remaining equipment — pumps, filters, aerators — follows the manufacturer guidelines.

Load management

No minimum or maximum load to run the STP — it works even under 100% shock loads.

Carbon savings

At least 65% lower carbon emissions, on the back of the electricity saved.

✓Only 45° bends

Aquatron® against other conventional STPs

MBBR and SBR plants treat sewage as one mixed stream of solids and liquids, which means sludge without pause, higher energy draw and a more complex operation. Aquatron parts the two at the source, so the plant is more energy-efficient, easier to run, far less dependent on skilled manpower, and more compact and cost-effective across its life.
